The Spirit of the Long March

The spirit of the Long March means putting the fundamental interests of the Chinese people and nation above all else, upholding firm revolutionary ideals and beliefs, the belief that a just cause would surely succeed, a willingness to sacrifice everything to save the country and the people, no matter what difficulties and obstacles lay ahead; remaining committed to independence and autonomy, to seeking unity; relying closely on the people, sharing weal and woe with the people, and fighting bitterly alongside the people.

In October 1934, after the failure of the fifth  “counter-encirclement- and-suppression”  campaign, the Central Red Army, the main force, was forced to withdraw from the central base area and carried out a great strategic transfer. The Red Army in other base areas also carried out transfers successively.

The Communist Party of China led the Red Armies of workers and farmers crossing through 14 provinces, surpassing the Five Ridges Ranges, the Xiangjiang River, the Wujiang River, the Jinsha River, the Dadu River, snow-capped mountains, grasslands, fighting more than 600 battles with the enemies, with a journey of 25,000 li (12500 km). In October 1936, the Red Armies of the First Front, the Second Front, and the Fourth Front successfully met together in the Huining area of Gansu province. On the journey of the Long March, the soldiers of the Red Army strengthened their ideals and beliefs, overcame numerous difficulties, conquered the limits of human existence with “the will as iron and sacrifice ofblood”, created unparalleled heroic deeds, and composed an amazing great revolutionary poem, and formed the great spirit of the Long March. 

把全国人民和中华民族的根本利益看得高于一切，坚定革命理想和信念，坚信正义事业必然胜利；救国救民，不怕任何艰难险阻，不惜付出一切牺牲的革命乐观主义；坚持独立自主、实事求是、一切从实际出发；顾全大局、严守纪律、紧密团结；紧紧依靠人民群众，同人民群众生死相依、患难与共，艰苦奋斗。

1934年10月，第五次反“围剿”失败后，中央主力军红军被迫撤离中央根据地，实行战略大转移，其他根据地红军也先后实施转移。中国共产党率领工农红军途径14个省，翻越翻越五岭山脉、湘江、乌江、金沙江、大渡河、雪山草地等万水千山，同敌人进行了600余次战斗，行程二万五千里，于1936年10月，红一、红二、红四方面军在甘肃会宁地区胜利会师。漫漫长征路途中，红军将士坚定理想信念，克服重重困难，用“铁的意志，血的牺牲”征服了人类生存极限，创造了无与伦比的英雄业绩，谱写了惊天地泣鬼神的伟大革命诗篇，铸就了伟大的长征精神。
